Behind The Scenes at Luss Distillery

Behind The Scenes at Luss Distillery

Grounded by a Sense of Place

Soon, step inside Luss Distillery and you’ll feel it straight away – a calm connection to the natural world that surrounds us. Set on the western banks of Loch Lomond, in the heart of one of Scotland’s most charming villages, our Visitor Centre, Shop & Cafe have been thoughtfully designed to sit gently within their surroundings – not apart from them. Here, mountain and loch sit side by side – one bold and adventurous, the other deep and contemplative – and together they shape our home. Ben Lomond Scottish Gin, inspired by the adventurous spirit of the ‘Beacon Mountain’, forms the heart of Luss Distillery – woven into the architectural DNA of our entire space. In balance, the dedicated Loch Lomond Whiskies experience creates rich, reflective pockets where visitors will be able to pause and savour the quiet complexity of our award-winning single malts. From the natural materials we’ve chosen to the striking views we’ve framed, every detail reflects the storied landscapes that inspired our spirits – and have gone on to inspire our new home at Luss Distillery.

The Beacon That Guides Us

One shape appears again and again throughout Luss Distillery: the beacon. This clean, four-sided diamond is more than a design feature – it’s a nod to Ben Lomond, once known as the ‘Beacon Mountain’. Historically, a fire at the summit would guide travellers across the lands. Today, that same idea runs through our space – lighting the way, inviting people to look closer, or take the next step. You’ll soon notice the beacon in the details – in hand-crafted furniture, in the viewpoint to our copper gin still, and in the immersive experiences that frame each visit. It’s the majestic thread that will pave the way for your adventure at Luss Distillery.

Materials That Belong Here

The building harmonises with its surroundings. Its outer walls are clad in locally sourced Douglas Fir, preserved using the traditional Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. This method – applied here to timbers milled just down the road in Alexandria – uses fire instead of chemicals to create a charred layer that protects the wood from moisture, insects, and decay. Douglas Fir, first introduced from North America by Scots-born adventurer David Douglas in 1827, responds beautifully to this treatment. Once brushed back, its distinctive grain reveals textures and tones that shift with the light. Just as a beacon once burned atop Ben Lomond, flame has shaped the walls that will soon welcome every visitor to Luss Distillery.

Step inside, and the atmosphere changes. The same Douglas Fir brings warmth and strength to the space, its form visible in the exposed structural features overhead. Sourced from a mix of plantation and managed forestry, and milled locally, these homegrown Scottish timbers are part of the region’s history – and central to our visitor experience.

Elsewhere, another story unfolds in the wood. In partnership with Scottish Water, we’ve repurposed ash and elm trees felled during essential works. Instead of being chipped, they’ve been transformed into furniture and fittings. Every bench, table and counter reveals its own character through grain and knot, form and finish. This is a celebration not only of the adventurous spirit  held within these wild lands, but of nature’s ongoing role in sustainable design. Each piece contains around 50% of its weight in carbon, captured during the tree’s lifetime and now stored in solid form as part of the building.

Even our colour palette draws from the landscape: cool slate greys, chalky whites, and warm copper tones inspired by the stills inside and the glow of the hills at day's end. Nature, when respected, offers not just beauty – but practical solutions too.

A Place for Adventure
